ARTIST IN RESIDENCE, EVERETT Y. S. CHING
Everett Y. S. Ching is not only the co-owner of Native Winds, he's also an accomplished pen and ink artist and creator of washi paper collage.
Born and raised in Hawai`i, Everett was adopted at birth by a single mother who passed on her love and knowledge of both Hawaiian and Chinese traditions. He recalls being surrounded by huge brown paper bags of colorful feathers as she hand-crafted uli ulis, the colorful feather gourds used by hula dancers. She told him stories that shaped his view of the world and engendered a deep and abiding love of the old Hawai`i and the Aloha Spirit. He grew up in a world where indigenous Hawaiians, Asians and Pacific Islanders were a seamless part of each other's communities.
For the past fifteen years, he has enjoyed Hawaii's Native American community and watched his daughter as she grew both inside and outside the powwow circle becoming an accomplished fancy shawl dancer. In addition to his art which captures the spirit of Hawai`i, he has created Native American images and drawings of friends and family in the community.
